Located in Boulder, CO this home includes a walk-out basement opening to a patio and yard with a small creek running through it. The homeowners wanted to renovate this lower level family room to include a small kitchen. Regularly hosting family spread across the country and entertaining friends, they knew this kitchen would be a great addition. More importantly, they plan to age-in-place, so the kitchen may someday provide a great space for a live-in caregiver.
Like all good marriages, this kitchen is about compromise; He wanted the warm dark cherry cabinets and she loves white marble countertops. The first thing we did was open the wall to the rest of the family room and include a peninsula with seating. The 24″ oven and cooktop, 18″ dishwasher are scaled to fit the small space and provide exceptional cooking. We used a thick edge treatment on the marble with a tall backsplash, and accented the back wall with a glass and marble tile that both brightens the space and protects the cooking wall. The only thing missing? The party!
